Green Corridor System: Fastest and life-saving system
Here the term ‘green’ is not used for eco-friendly or as the color green. Here it is used to make something free from something. Here we are making the road/roads free from the traffic. The green corridor system refers to the route that has been demarcated for an ambulance to carry the organ swiftly and safely from one hospital to another hospital for the potential recipient.
This system is the most important race of life which turns life-threatening complications and situations into lifesaving ones. This system is all about effective management, efficiency, success, and making it on time. This system is used for the transportation of the organ/organs like the heart, liver, kidney, eyes, and even skins within the minimum possible time between the different cities.
The prime objective to make this system is to cover a long-distance route in the least possible time to carry the donated organs to the needful patients. Time management is the most crucial factor in making the green corridor a success. But much before that we need to understand the need for the high-speed journey. Organs that have to be transported and transplanted have a short preservation time. It must be viable and in a normal condition till the time it reaches the patient. Harvesting, carrying the organ, and the final surgery and transplantation calls for a lightning-fast speed for which a ‘Green Corridor’ is set up.
People from administrative bodies, police departments, hospitals, and NGOs are involved to make the entire process successful. The experts from the different departments, first of all, decide whether to activate the green corridor and then put their best efforts to make it quick transfer. The people from the NGO are connected with the family whose family member has died and decided to donate the organ/organs. The administration and police department selects the best suitable route and then make it traffic-free with the help of police and traffic cops. Then after an ambulance carrying the organ/organs is being sent on the decided route from the organ pickup place to the hospital and the route and traffic condition of the route is constantly monitored by the police department to take any necessary decision if required.
This system not only helps to save the life of critical patients but also helps to popularize and facilitated the need and value of organ donation among the masses. In India, this concept is used since 2014. Chennai was the first city to incorporate this concept. It was used to carry a heart to save the life of a 21 old and covered a distance of 12kms in only 14 minutes from Chennai Government General Hospital to Fortis Malhar Hospital in Adyar. Surat has become the first city in India to have incorporated the system of black and white notification which makes sure that no time is wasted in creating a green corridor.
